The colors on the cover make it look like an old photo. But it's an uninteresting photo of two outstretched hands Generic. So while the colors would likely catch my eye in a bookstore, I still might pass it by. If I picked it up, the blurb, on the one hand, sounds intriguing. A young woman returning home after surviving a labor camp—it's refreshing to see a historical fiction book that isn't set right amidst WWII. That being said, this is still set during the end/aftermath of WWII. It would be nice if authors realized there are so many other time periods and historical events that might make a nice historical fiction setting. But I digress. On the other hand, there are a couple of flags for me in the blurb. First, the MC is 16, so this is teetering more towards historical YA. And then there's the "last person Maria trusts . . . even as she feels a growing connection to him that she can't resist." UGH. Not only does that scream of romance, it's also a terrible cliche. So historical YA romance, and now I'm not as interested. But I checked out the excerpt. I like the map. I love books with maps, so that's a plus. The story starts off pretty well with Maria's first POV. But the next chapter switched to Kostya's third POV. Switching POVs, especially from first to third, doesn't always work well. So with that and the other things I mentioned, this is a maybe for me.
