The Silent Unseen takes place mostly after World War II has ended, but has the same grimness as many of those novels, especially in that it takes place in Soviet controlled Ukraine. There's a certain timeliness to this, but the preview that includes two characters completely unconnected to each other at that point in the story does not make the book seem any more appealing.
