Maria and Kostya are both suffering through 1944 and the war. So much is learned about the two in the first chapter, I feel as if I have known them for years. Both are brave, and determined in ways that they don't understand yet. They have suffered on a daily basis and can't see an end to it. I can't wait to read the rest of the book and see how their paths will cross.
