The opening sentence of The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides immediately caught my attention! “Alicia Berenson was thirty three years old when she killed her husband.” I liked how the author used short chapters to tell this story. Theo Farber is a forensic psychotherapist who changes jobs to work at the Grove for the opportunity to work with Alicia who has not spoken since the shooting six years ago.
Both of our main characters had difficult childhoods. The author is very clever in exposing us to the earlier lives of Alicia, a well-known painter, and Theo, who is anxious to get Alicia to talk with him.
This is a fast-paced novel figuring out what would make Alicia shoot her husband five times in the face. And then there is the surprise ending that left this reader asking, “What just happened?” Thank you Bookish First and Celadon Books for an ARC.
