This story is told from Theo's point of view. He is a psychotherapist who is determined to get Alicia to explain why she did what she did. Alicia is a famous artist, who seemed to have the perfect life...until she shot her husband when he came home one day, and then she stopped speaking. Now she's locked up in a ward as they try and figure out what actually happened. There is no question she killed her husband, but why? And why won't she speak anymore? What did she experience that shut down her desire to communicate with anyone?
As Theo tries to get her to open up, you learn things about his life too and the whole book takes a turn. Then he finally makes progress, when Alicia attacks him during a therapy session. I have to say I did not see the twist coming at the end, and the way the whole thing comes together. Quite the ride, I read this in almost one sitting.
