In his debut novel, Alex Michaelides weaves a brilliant, mind-bending tale of a female artist named Alicia who refuses to speak after her famous photographer husband Gabriel is murdered. Her behavior confuses everyone around her as she does not defend herself and ending up in an asylum. As a result, a psychotherapist makes it his mission to make her speak again even if it kills them both.

I was immediately drawn in by the intricacies and imagery of the story, and it reminded me of an Agatha Christie tale (and in fact, at the end of the book, you learn that he was inspired by none other than the Queen of Crime herself!). The plot drives forward in such a way that makes it virtually un-put-down-able, and the twisted ending makes you doubt this story was the same one you initially started. This book was my first foray into the genre of psychological thriller, and it certainly won't be my last.
