I’m sitting here trying to figure out what I can say about this book that won’t be a spoiler…so I think I’m just going to avoid talking about the plot altogether! I generally enjoyed this, but I can’t quite say I loved it. I think that’s primarily due to the fact that I struggled to connect with any of the characters. Alicia is the character I most wanted to understand, but her silence is an obvious barrier to really getting to know her. And I found Theo to be a very narcissistic character - I was expecting him to be our window into Alicia, but he’s so preoccupied with himself and his own problems that he doesn’t really fulfill that role.
It’s certainly well written and great suspenseful storytelling, so I’m excited to see what debut author Alex Michaelides comes up with next. This one just wasn’t the slam dunk for me that it was for a lot of people.
