This is the debut book from Alex Michaelides and it is thrilling.

Alicia Berenson is a famous painter married to a fashion photographer. Her life is seemingly perfect – huge house in one of London’s most desirable areas. In one moment it is shattered due to the death of her husband Gabriel.

It is Alicia who shatters the life by shooting him in the face, not once but five times. No apparent motive; and Alicia is not talking. She utters no words about it – not even to defend herself. While she is hidden away in a forensic unit, her art becomes more popular.

Alicia has not spoken in the six years since. Why?

Enter Theo Faber, a criminal psychotherapist. He talks to those who know her and even tries to gain insight from her diary/journal.

It’s been viewed as “over-hyped” and “clichéd”.

For a first novel, the premise is interesting but can bog you down. I won’t spoil it, but recommend reading reviews and borrowing before purchase just in case.
