A lot of hype and definitely worth a read.

If Goodreads allowed half stars, this would be an ideal candidate. I would like to give it more than 3, but it's not a 4 in my opinion.

The plot had me from the very beginning, I was entirely drawn in to the mystery of it and wanted to carry on reading to find out what would happen. Unfortunately, the writing style wasn't for me and I felt that it was trying too hard to be poetic or meaningful in the prose which didn't really suit the story. Another reviewer on here has mentioned that the author said in an interview that it was meant to be more Hitchcock style, which I also see now that I've read it, and had I gone in with that expectation perhaps I would have enjoyed it more.

I found myself skipping ahead to get more plot and less character development which again spoiled it for me a little. The characters were not very likeable and I didn't invest in any of them (except possibly Elif who was in it so infrequently).

Theo, the main protagonist, was a difficult character to enjoy. I found him to be arrogant and narcissistic, seeing himself as almost omnipotent. He was so certain that his own observations were correct and made snap judgements about people he had only just met.

All this in mind, I did enjoy the story and the twist at the end was unexpected (until the very last moment). I would definitely recommend reading this book and wish I had not gone in with such high expectations. Had I been able to approach it without the hype that surrounds it, I may have taken it more lightly and enjoyed it more.
