"The Sea Is Salt And So Am I", by Cassandra Hartt, takes place the the small fictional town of West Finch, Maine. This novel is told from the point of view of its three main characters: Ellis and Tommy who are identical twin brothers, and Harlow who is a friend to Ellis and a foe to Tommy. All of the characters in this novel have issues (not just the main characters). Honestly, it was impossible to truly like any of them. However, that's what makes this novel work! Even though, this is fiction, the characters are realistic and their actions towards each other makes sense. The relationships between the characters in this book are complex. Tommy's attempt and continuous thoughts of suicide; Ellis' loss of his leg, contempt for Tommy, and confused feelings for Harlow; and Harlow's complicated relationships with Ellis and Tommy. Ms. Hartt did an amazing job of describing the characters, setting, and plot. I wasn't a fan of the ending. However, I feel that it worked based on the storyline. I would definitely recommend this novel.
