This story takes place in a New England town that is currently being hit by a storm. The main character is a teenaged girl named Harlow Prout. She has a complicated relationship with twin brothers Ellis and Tommy. Ellis is her best friend while she and Tommy hate each other for some reason. Ellis has lost part of his leg, but he's a long distance runner. Tommy is extremely depressed and also owns a dog that he loves named Goose.
The beach in their town is gradually eroding, and during this storm an old house becomes flooded. As Harlow and Ellis explore the area around the house they notice Ellis's twin brother, Tommy, going out for a swim in the harsh and frigid ocean. Even though they suspect he's attempting suicide, they don't step in. Luckily, the adults in the community figure out that Tommy's in danger and a family friend rescues him with his lobster boat. After Tommy gets out of the hospital, the reader discovers that he could possibly be in love with Harlow as well as hating her. She's done some horrible things to him in the past which caused him to lose his girlfriend and possibly brought on his depression.
I thought the book was interesting and I would keep reading it if I had the entire novel. I want to know why Harlow is so cruel to Tommy. Also, why is she so obsessed with Ellis? What will Tommy do when he finds out that his dog has terminal cancer?
So far, I don't like Harlow. I don't understand why she's so mean to Tommy and I'm not appreciative of the cruel things she does to him. I'm hoping if I keep reading the book I will get more detail about the relationship between them. Also, hopefully she will grow and change as the story continues?
