TW: Suicide, depression, animal death, violence, death of a loved one.

To preface this review, I am not one to normally or frequently pick up a contemporary title. I usually lean towards fantasy/science fiction but have been trying to branch out of that box and I think that this book was a good first step for me.

This book revolves around Harlow, Tommy, and Ellis in their small Maine town that, like the rest of the world, is seeing the impacts of climate change. Harlow is trying to save her town. Tommy and Ellis are twins. Ellis is constantly running away from his problems while Tommy is stuck drowning in his own mind and struggling with depression.

Sometimes, reading books about depressed characters is hard. Hard, though not because of the content. Hard because it is not done well. The Sea Is Salt and So Am I proved to the YA contemporary genre that is possible to depict depression and suicide in a manner that is serious - and seriously good. An overall great read.
