I'm not sure how I feel about The Sea is Salt and So Am I now that I have finished it. From the very beginning I didn't like it, it felt like every other novel in the similar genre. Some girl must save depressed boy, seemed inevitable they would fall in love, but it was just so unrealistic? Maybe flat is the correct word.
However eventually, I fell into the groove of the novel and parts of it didn't seem so bad anymore and I was able to read instead of 'muster through' it. Each character gained more shape and personality to their own plotline, even if only for a short period of time.
The entire book centers around an incident they won't describe until the very end, which personally just annoys me because they hinted at it enough that it was more like unsubtle foreshadowing than vital to the big reveal at the end. And once the book ends, it goes back towards having to muscle through reading it. I think it is mainly because to the writer it made sense because all the pieces fit in their head, but it sounds choppy and weird to the reader.
The conclusion isn't a conclusion at all, it is left up to speculation as to what the future may hold, so beware if you don't like ends not tied up.
Honestly, I'm so sorry. I don't like leaving bad reviews, and this book wasn't entirely bad or difficult to sit through. But enough of it was weird enough that I wouldn't recommend it to a friend. Maybe that's just because I've already read enough books like this, maybe not.
