The Sea Is Salt, And So Am I (Young Adult novel)
by Cassandra Hartt
Publication Date: June 8th, 2021

Trigger Warnings: Mental illness, suicide attempts, underage drinking

This novel is told in chapters by the three main characters: Harlow Prout, her best friend Ellis, and Ellis's brother Tommy. They live in a small town in Maine that is currently in danger of being swept out to sea, due to bad storms. We (the readers) learn that the three teenagers are doing whatever they can to stop their town from disappearing. I'm a recent transplant to the state of Maine, and throughout reading this book, I could almost smell the salty air and hear the waves crashing. This book spoke to me because of the author's exceptional writing about mental illness, and how it can affect any of us. Ellis's brother Tommy suffers from mental illness, and Hartt treats his character with dignity and respect.

This is a very complex and emotional book. The relationships between the three teens and their families/friends can be carefree on one day and fraught with tension the next day. It is easy to relate to Harlow, Ellis, and Tommy because I was once a teenager myself, along with having suffered from mental illness for many years.

I thought that this was a really beautifully-written and emotional book. I am looking forward to reading more from Cassandra Hartt.
