This YA novel reads like a literary fiction novel. There is so much going on and a lot to unpack in this stormy read. There are three teenagers telling this story, there's a suicide attempt, two brothers and Harlow, the friend of one of the brothers who wants to save her down from washing away into the sea.
Honestly, this can't be YA, as a high school teacher, I can't imagine my students being able to keep up with this book. There were times I had to go back and re-read. The book is a bit too long but written so beautifully I had to add a star. Harlow and her best friend watch his brother go out into the Atlantic in an attempt to die, but he is found by a fisherman and his suicide is stopped. There are- of course- secrets buried that come to the surface and a brotherhood broken. I didn't love the book but it had so much potential! Three stars for excellent diction and description but it took on too much in one YA novel.
