When I was younger, there were quite a few YA (young adult) stories out there - Babysitter's Club, Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley High, Sweet Dreams Books, and some by APPLE/SCHOLASTIC.
Most of these were light-hearted, upbeat. Rarely had "real-life" issues in them. If it did, they were light and only went so far.
Today, there are SO many types out there. Some have darker themes than they used to.
While I read very little YA (I push it with the Twilight Saga) - this book has a lot of issues and hidden messages in it.
This isn't the type of book I'd read or buy for my teen, but it is one that if the parent is comfortable with it or the teen wants it - it would likely be a good one.
Not impressed by the cover though.
