This is a book I found myself drawn to over and over by the cover, but set it down multiple times after ambling through the book blurb.

Academia, necromancy, strong family values- pretty standard stuff, and bland more often than not. But BOY does Kylie Lee Baker have a way with words. Almost immediately I found myself enmeshed in the world, engrossed in the story, and in love with the protagonist.

One of three is usually enough to give a book 50 - 100 pages before deciding how I feel, but three of three is rare. There simply are too many books and not enough time to be overly generous.

Suffice to say, Zilan's moral ambiguity and a biting tongue drew me in from the start. The stakes were believable, and the story moved at a clip that didn't bore with detail. In fact, every cultural nugget helped to paint the picture of a woman jaded by the treatment of her status. Therein, the question becomes which consequences are hers, and which are society's, for the predicament she finds herself in.

I cannot remember the last time a book held me cover to cover and I am eager to see what Kylie Lee baker cooks up next!
