The Scarlet Alchemist follows the journey of Zilan, a merchants daughter, as she follows her dream of being a royal alchemist. In this coming of age story, Zilan discovers her abilities, struggles with her family background and her identity, and attempts to find belonging. She started as someone who has a somewhat naive view of the world and wants to achieve greatness, but ends up learning about true power and the sacrifices that need to be made.
I found Zilan to be a complex, multi layered character that undergoes a lot of character growth. I admire her perseverance, quick thinking, and how she overcomes obstacles as she gains new life experiences. I enjoyed seeing how her relationship with the Prince developed.
While the plot did start slow paced, it does pick up and become action packed with plot twists. The ending sets up the premise of the next book, and I’m excited to continue reading.
