From the get-go, The Scarlet Alchemist intrigues you. Zilan, our protagonist, ambitiously wishes to become a royal alchemist, because of her own desires and out of a need to support her family. The idea of a royal alchemist isn't new to fiction or to me, but Baker's spin on it feels refreshingly original. Although the pacing is a bit slow, the scenes are spectacularly written, the plot twists entertaining (albeit a bit predictable), and the characters witty. The Scarlet Alchemist takes place in an alternate Tang Dynasty where the Empress Wu has created an elixir of immortality, and Zilan's merchant family is on the brink of starvation. The author notes facts from fiction in her alternate reality, which is helpful for a history student and bookworm such as myself, and I found that to be a nice touch. She keeps food on the table by practicing illegal alchemy, but when she finds herself in the capital to take imperial exams, and the crown prince asking for her help, what does she do? Prince Hong did not stand out as a character, particularly since he's surrounded by such strong FMCs, but his softness grew on me, and by the end he's my favourite. His and Zilan's banter and romance were captivating and fun to read, if a bit rushed. There was quite a bit of violence and gore, so be prepared for that if you're planning to read it. I can't wait for the sequel!
