Zilan dreams of becoming a royal alchemist to provide for her family by making gold and gems for the wealthy. She finally gets the chance but encounters many obstacles. The crown Prince being one of them. Her reputation of raising the dead has proceeded her and the Empress has ears and eyes everywhere. The more she succeeds, the more she gets caught in the dangerous politics of the royal family. It’s only a matter of time before the monsters and the secrets of Zilan’s past catch up to her and threaten everything she’s worked for.
I really enjoyed the book and the authors way of describing the monsters and just how greedy and evil the Empress was. I truly rooted for the main character, Zilan. It was kinda gory at points and I loved it!
One of the main rules throughout the book is that you cannot create good without also creating evil. It also identifies social issues of being a mixed race. I can’t wait for the sequel!
