Zilan practices alchemy in secret, as a means to survive. All while dreaming of being a royal alchemist. She gets a chance to prove herself, and must go to great lengths to earn her spot in the palace. When the Crown Prince seeks her help, she gets tangled up in a political assassination attempt. The first half dragged a tad, but it's to take the time to world build. The twist on the Tang dynasty is done so well, while adding in mythology and magical elements, whilst still keeping it grounded in the culture of the original events.

Our main character Zilan is the furthest from an optimist, she is a survivor. She fully relies on the powers of her alchemy. Outside of those close to her, she is brash. She doesn't hesitate to wipe out her competition, thru any means necessary. Her motivation is her family, so her decisions are motivated by her love for them. The ending sets up for the sequel perfectly, and I'm ready to devour it.
