Wow, what a whirlwind of a book! The Scarlet Alchemist is phenomenal in so many ways. I mean, look at the the cover, it is absolutely stunning! The characters are well written and multidimensional, even the villain of the story is pretty incredible, intelligent, and ruthless. The beautiful backdrop and world building is intricate and unique. It's set in an alternates history China a century after alchemists from the Tang dynamsty have succeeded in creating the elixir or immortality.
Zilan is an alchemist and known in her small town, not only an orphan with mixed heritage, but she's able to resurrect the dead. She's very talented, but untrained. Her cousins Wenshu and Yufei are like her bother and sister. Their bond is really special, I could feel the love and care through the pages, I adore them to pieces. The three travel to various cities to take exams in hopes of a better life for them and their parents. Zilan studying to be an alchemist and her cousins as scholars. Zilan will soon realize being a palace alchemist is more dangerous than she expected. Instead of a better palace life, she's on constant alert to stay alive, outsmart the competition, and enemies she has made.
I highly recommend The Scarlet Alchemist and quite bummed I have to wait so long for the sequel!
