Loved this take on Chinese folklore/elements adapted into a fantasy setting. I don't know what it is, but I have noticed Asian-fusion based YA settings are more dark and adventurous. "The Last Alchemist" did not disappoint in this respect. I liked seeing the trials and tribulations Zilan went through to claw her way into the royal court, only to realize that she has entered into a serpents' den of intrigue.

I have seen a lot of advertising of late as to the romance aspect of this book. Honestly, while not obnoxious, it wasn't a highlight to me as seeing the constant challenge Zilan put to those who wished to deride her due to her biracial status. That being said, I didn't mind the romance or the male love interest, but considering how the book went, I wouldn't be surprised if Baker makes the decision to focus more on it in the next book in the duology.
