This is a book I find myself drawn back to over and over by the cover, but set it down after ambling through the book blurb. Academia, necromancy, strong family values- pretty standard stuff, and bland more often than not. But BOY does Kylie Lee Baker have a way with words. In the first two chapters alone I found myself enmeshed in the world, engrossed in the story, and in love with the protagonist. One of three is usually enough to give a book 50 - 100 pages before deciding how I feel, but three of three is rare. There simply are too many books and not enough time to be overly generous.

Suffice to say, Zilan has moral ambiguity and a biting tongue. The stakes are believable, and the story moves at a clip that gives you everything you need to know without feeling like a textbook. I cannot wait to pick this one up and finish it!
