Interesting Premis
The premise of this book is very interesting. Rooted in traditional medicine and Tang-dynasty era alchemy, it has a basis in reality while shifting to the fantastical. The divide between the wealthy and poor feels very timely, as we see similar themes today; something that I think this book is bound to explore more in depth in later chapters.
The narration is unique; some anachronistic lines and the use of modern Mandarin words in place of archaic terminology. The narrator is acerbic and cynical, which made for fun dialogue between her and the rich man. I'm interested in seeing how she and her "siblings" are able to handle their exams in the big city, and to learn more about this magic system.
