This was a well-crafted contemporary suspense novel written by a debut author, and it completely blew me away. I usually go into books of this genre feeling like I'm going to "guess the twist" partway through and lose interest. This book was SO difficult to put down, and even though I had a good idea what was coming, Ms Downes did such a terrific job of fleshing out the story that it didn't feel like a letdown at all.

Emily Proudman has just hit the bottom of the proverbial barrel by losing her job, her apartment, and her acting agent in the same day. Her acting career never actually took off to start, but she has been desperately hitting calls trying to make it. Now that she has nothing, so receives a strange offer from her former employer for a more personal job with his family. She lands in France with no idea what to expect, but arrives to a beautiful estate with his wife and physically impaired daughter. She doesn't suspect anything wrong at first, but as time goes on more and more things start to feel off. She ends up stumbling upon a horrible truth, and finds that it isn't easy to walk away from it.

I highly recommend this book to fans of Gillian Flynn, Shari LaPena, and other contemporary thrillers.
