The Safe Place is a thriller, primarily from the perspective of Emily, an aspiring actress who finds herself out of a job and place to live. When her former boss offers her a job at his French estate, it sounds like a perfect opportunity for Emily to get away.

Unfortunately, The Safe Place was a predictable and disappointing read for me. Initially, the mystery behind the relationship between Scott and Nina was intriguing. The reader knows from the start that Scott sets up Emily to be fired, knowing that she will be desperate enough to take the job he offers her. For a while, wondering what in the world was going on was enough to keep me turning the page, but eventually I realized the direction the story was going in. The characters weren't compelling enough, so in the end I didn't care about what happened to them (except, of course, Aurelia).
