This book was an absolutely fun, wild ride! I loved the characters, even the unlikable ones, and I was very intrigued by the story structure. When Scott pinpoints his hapless temp Emma as "perfect", we are unsure for what. Then he sends her to live in their sprawling French countryside mansion with his unstable wife and strange little daughter. As the friendship between Emma and the wife deepens, there's signs of strangeness everywhere, but Emma is unsure what is really going on. When things start to really unravel, she has nowhere to go and no way to get there. This book has been described often as "atmospheric", and I have to agree. It's got shades of a gothic story, some locked room elements, and a lot of red herrings. I couldn't put it down, I read it in one sitting! Great beach read, or a title to pick up if you just want to get fully immersed in a twisty story.
