First impression: The Safe Place seems to have all the elements of an exciting beach, pool, or bathtub read.

The excerpt pulls you right into a story of menace and intrigue, from the compelling cover (a luminous but ominously elongated infinity pool) to the interplay in POV between the desperate, down-on-her-luck actress and the seemingly sociopathic CEO who is obsessed with her.

The writing is fluid and accomplished, revealing the characters through actions and dialogue. One of the most effective scenes in the excerpt was a telephone call in which the actress protagonist manages to alienate her mother - her last hope of support. With devastating brevity, the author skillfully conveys both sides of the conversation - the actress' humiliation and her mother's hurt.

The bones of the plot are revealed early, laying the groundwork for what promises to be a layered, suspenseful read.
