A slow start with an ending you won't forget!
The first chapters of The Safe Place pulled me in with its Jane Eyre vibes. A dark and broody man who offers a job at his remote French estate. A girl with no job, no savings, and no one to turn to for support who is desperate and believes this dream job could answer all of her problems. Add in a mysterious wife who is hidden away and the suspenseful and gothic vibes are complete.
I was excited for Emily to start her job at the estate and for a mystery to unfold but after her arrival I felt that the book stalled. Yes, there were some suspenseful moments but it took longer than I expected for the pace of the story to really pick up so my sense of anticipation took some time to really grow. Even with a slow start, once I was pulled in I didn’t want the story to end. The strange behaviors, no phones or internet, and parts of the estate that are absolutely off-limits. Who wouldn’t want to find out more? I loved that the ending was one that I didn’t expect and overall this was a great read!
