The Safe Place begins with an interesting premise: a down-on-her-luck girl, a mysterious couple, a secluded estate. The first few chapters swap between two perspectives: that of Emily, the out-of-work actress, and Scott, the seemingly masochistic husband. It's an effective narrative device and provides us with some insight into each character's psyche while also preserving their secrets. This thriller seems very promising and is shaping up to be the book of the summer.
