Emily is a sympathetic character. I would like to see her not have to struggle. Scott, on the other hand starts out as creepy and then later seems downright diabolical. The author does a good job of doling out information and clues a bit at a time. By the time the sample ended, I was really curious about the mysterious, dangerous tone of the book and where the plot might be headed. Things don't look good for Emily!
