In four quick chapters we are introduced to Emily and Scott: two people at the opposite ends of the social scale. Emily is a struggling actress who works part time at Proem Partnerships a a temp, assigned to be the receptionist. Scott Denny is the CEO of Proem and is very successful at it.

Emily's life is falling apart at the seams. Her audition went badly. Then she got back to her job a bit late and was fired. When she arrived at her flat she discovered that the check for payment of rent bounced so she would need to leave in a few weeks. She has another audition but little hope. And to add insult to injury, her credit card is canceled and her mother is yelling at her again.

We learn in the fourth chapter that Scott seems to have a problem with his wife, Nina. It also seems that Scott is the one who orchestrated Emily's firing. He has done a thorough research of Emily and has need of her in another capacity.

In a way, this book reminds me of Liane Moriarty's work. While Anna Downes has begun what appears on the surface to be an ordinary tale of a down-on-her-luck woman and a rich man who might be able to help her, there is the feel of something beneath the surface that is not quite what it appears, and I, for one, am curious to find out what it is.

I would love to read and review THE SAFE PLACE by Anna Downes!
