Emily is an actress, working as a receptionist, who does not have a lot of control of her life. After a disastrous reading and being fired from her job her only recourse is to appeal to her mother for a loan. Even that does not go well. Scott was Emily’s boss with troubles of his own. He has observed Emily and sees her as a possible solution to one of those problems. Firing her as a receptionist makes her available for whatever plan he has. This is an opening that foreshadows a story of manipulation that may be too good to be true.
