The Rib King is definitely a deviance from my usual type of book. While I love historical fiction, I usually am more interested in British and WWII historical fiction. This story takes place in 1914 and 1924, and focuses on the Black hired staff of a White household. The household is losing money, and the head of the household is looking actively for ways to make and save money. The head of the household, in essence, steals a recipe for a sauce that Mr. Sitwell and Mamie (the cook) invented, and sold it for a profit.

The ensuing chaos from this incident is felt for decades. The first part of the book is told from Mr. Sitwell's POV, and the second from Jennie's. Jennie was also staff at the home.

Personally, I felt like this book was really slow, and didn't go anywhere fast. Jennie's POV section read marginally faster than Mr. Sitwell's, but I wasn't really impressed. I found myself falling asleep and just generally not enjoying the whole book. This book is "readable" but maybe just not in my wheelhouse.
