This book was packed with enough plot, characterization, and subplots it easily could have been stretched into a series. It is split into two parts, the first half reading like an expose on how hired help and people of color were treated by their not even trying to hide it white employers. However, the second half, told from a perspective of a side character from the first section, goes in a completely different direction and recounts events that are not seen on the page. Trust me when I say there will be massive revelations you will never see coming and yet somehow they make sense with the given background information.
The author undertakes the monumental task of introducing various, complicated in their own way, threads and weaves them all together by the story's end (will their employers lose a big deal and thus need to fire some of their employees, how is Sitwell's personal life tied to a popular novel, and more that I am leaving out to avoid potential spoilers). Although this wasn't the overall story I expected from the summary, it was one I thoroughly enjoyed and will never forget.
