The Barclay’s are an upper class white family whose fortune is rapidly depleting. Barclay launches a money making scheme that exploits his Black household staff and the story follows the aftermath of this decision. The first half of this character-driven story focuses on August Sitwell who has worked for the Barclay family since childhood and he becomes the face of the ‘Rib King’ sauce. The second half focuses on Jennie Williams who worked as a maid for the Barclay’s and is an entrepreneur.

Set in the early twentieth century, The Rib King is a captivating novel that explores racism, classism, identity and injustice. The writing is beautiful, sharp and transports the reader to another time. The characters are vivid and memorable. Hubbard tackles many controversial, timely topics throughout this original, action-packed story.
