This book is unique and necessary, tackling the injustices African Americans have faced in the States. It’s told from two perspective, those of Mr. Sitwell and Jennie, who each get about half a book. It starts in New Orleans, in 1914 and goes through the context of race in that area during this time. The second half takes place 10 years after and it shows the results as well of a deeper explanation as to what happened a decade ago with Jennie now dealing with the aftermath. I think the story is hard to read, and even though as a character Mr. Sitwell, who becomes The Rib King, isn’t necessarily likable, the story does a good job of explaining why he is how he is. This is a book that will make you uncomfortable and sad and think and it is supposed to. It’s important to. And it’s ok to feel like that because it means we’re growing and a book like this is intended for its reader to grow.
