i wanted so badly to devour all 146 pages of Ladee Hubbard's The Rib King, but i was using the computer at work, and just when there are three books to be won, all by ethnic authors. i am so on company time, yikes! i was caught between going ahead and spreading it out and sneaking and reading about 40 pages a day (as i only had about 3 days to read this to write my first impression) and pushing it right to the last day and writing my first impression in a pool of sweat or just getting it done and over with, without reading all the pages because i was so excited about the possibility of winning it and getting to read the whole book anyway. am i over confident, yup! will i get into trouble, yup! anyway, i love the book so far because i am getting a 1800's vibe and i am always, always interested in reading anything that has to do with the history of my people during slavery or post slavery. this book, the first 34 pages i have read so far, seems to have an pretty darn good grasp of that time period. so i am very interested in finishing the story. i am getting the impression that this book will not make me so mad as to want to go out and scare people with my angry face, like so many stories both true and false have already done these days. but it will be a feel good type of book, a vindication type story that might make me cry then smile both.
