The first look hooks the reader immediately and is well-written. This story makes me think about the controversy surrounding the Aunt Jemima image. There has been incredible exploitation of images of people of color, especially those that depict them as slaves. This story seems highly relevant to this issue. The perspectives of people of color need to be included in historical fiction.
