Once in a while we are fortunate enough to open a book that is meant to be savored...not rushed. The Red Address Book is such a book.
We meet 96 year old Doris...alone in her flat in Stockholm. Physically weak but still mentally alert, she decides to write her life's story using the names that are in her address book...in order to tell her only living relative Jenny, the story she never knew.
Strong characters, a flowing story line and memorable quotes make this a very satisfying book. "Something happens to people who experience intense longing. Their eyes slowly dim, and they lose the ability to see the beauty in their surroundings, in their everyday life. The only way I could look was back. I embellished everything from my past, everything I could no longer be a part of."
The author portrays a story of a well lived life...not an easy one by any means but one that is remembered long after the book is finished.
