Love the character Doris in this excerpt. Although the reader is introduced to Doris as an aged 96 year old debilitated woman near the end of her days with all the aches and pains of her advanced years and her ingrained habits, including the preciseness of her ironed unruffled tablecloth, her arrangement of her possessions on the table just so, the caring of a precious piece of china that she treasures, the well-worn tattered red address book received from her father ("his soul is inside me") and her reminiscenses obtained from the address book as if looking at old photographs; she has in her mind and thinking the more modern, youthful outlook of a woman who needs to complete something important with her remaining years ( writing her history using the people listed in the address book.) Despite her failing, slow-moving body, she is determined achieve and learn. Her former caregiver, Maria, instructed her how to use the computer and told her that "no one was too old to learn something new," and Doris agreed and believes that "no one is too old to realize their dreams." She still has the capacity to be amazed with life as shown by her use of technology and is excited that she can communicate with the whole world with a few clicks on the Internet. She has mastered Facebook, Skype and e-mails. The Kindle cover doesn't depict the red color of the address book but the bundled letters are intriguing. I am looking forward to where Doris will take me next!
