The Red Address Book is supposed to be a reflection back on the elderly Doris' life, and a brief introduction in current times, it does exactly that. While it may eventually get to happy times, the first reflections that Doris has on her life are sad, uncomfortable and depressing. If the whole book is like this I don't know that I'd want to read it.
