Doris is old and she knows it. She knows that many of her friends and acquaintances have already died, so she chooses to reminisce about them using her address book that her father gave her for her tenth birthday. Her life seems to have been hard in this first look because we see her as a cherished daughter and then we see her as the youngest maid in a high society house. As the youngest, she has to do all of the jobs no one else wants to do, after leaving behind her education which she knows her deceased father would have wanted for her. This brief look into Doris’s life is fascinating as well as enticing since it makes the reader want to know more about Doris and the other people in her address book. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of her caretakers; Ulrika seems to care little about caring for her and more about just doing the job and getting home to her family. What a sad commentary on how the elderly are treated!
