We first get an introduction to the sad life of people gathered together, women mostly, caused by the irresponsibility of the person in the Urn. It seems there was little love involved between those left behind and the deceased since many were pregnant or carrying little ones. Despite a marriage of convenience between Will and Selena (to help her out, not for love), we read that Selena and Will were at least at one time friends. Also Will’s estate has left her millions that she feels doesn’t deserve or need. We just get a glimpse of a possible past love rekindled with the appearance of Knox, who we hear is also suffering from the death of his daughter, when in walks Will - the “dead man walking”.
