Wonderful World Building and Characters in this Fantasy Duology

Really enjoyed reading this again, and I'm remembering why I enjoyed this in the first place. It certainly wasn't a story that was genius by any means, but I did love this world and the characters in it.
Caledon Holt is the Queen's only assassin, bound by a vow of blood made between the Queen and his father. Shadow is a girl living with her aunts while practicing and hiding her magical talents and who longs to be a part of the Guild, a well known magic association. Cal and Shadow meet under unfortunate circumstances, where Cal is then sentenced to exile and Shadow follows him to help free him and hopes that she can become an assassin like him.
The cherry on top of this entire story was the finale. The invovlement of the Aphrasians and a magical, evil being was unexpected. It was also unexpected for everything else that ended up happening. I don't want to spoil, but I am really intrigued to see what happens next! Plus, these covers are amazingly beautiful.
