Review:

I've read a lot of YA Fantasy and enjoyed quite a few of Melissa de la Cruz's novels over the years so I was excited to check out The Queen's Assassin.

It ended up being an enjoyable read but fell short of my expectations. My favorite two aspects of the novel were: the writing style, which is not surprising because I've liked Melissa de la Cruz's prose, and the well-developed characters. I also found myself enjoying the romance aspect, which was a big part of the novel. It took me a while to warm up to it but in the end, I loved, Shadow and Caledon together.

The main reason I took off stars was the plot and the big twist. I was able to guess the big reveal before I started reading the novel. It felt very predictable and did not go far from the usual stereotypes.

I will be checking out book two of the series to find out what happens next to Shadow and Caledon. Thank you, BookishFirst for this early copy!
