This story is exactly what I expected. It seems like every other YA book related to royalty and assassins, I was hoping there would be something new to this one because there's less talk about the kingdom. Shadow doesn't have stable growth, but she seems to change personalities abruptly throughout the novel, which felt really annoying and unrealistic at times. The pacing is also hard to follow.
However, I felt that it was a fun and quick read, and I soon felt myself getting attached to the characters. Rooting for them in battle and things like that. Perhaps I was hoping that the book would have more depth in terms of danger, of politics surrounding the kingdom, or maybe even romance (which was more implied throughout the novel). The book also has changing perspectives! I love that aspect the most because it tells you so much about the characters!
