I found Queen's Assassin to be a lot of fun for a book intended for 9th graders (says it on the inside cover). It is a typical fantasy love story where a princess in disguise runs off to learn to be an assassin from the best assassin in the land who is bound to the crown.

There was nothing here that was new or amazing from my point of view but if I was a ninth grader...I would probably enjoy this book a lot. There are only two things I was a little concerned about; one I got used to and one that was just eye roll inducing.

First the book jumps from Cal and Shadow's POVs every other chapter or so which is fine and fair...however Shadow's POV chapters are all in first peson and Cal's are in third....I love their person narration but I found the constant flipping from one perspective to another exhausting. I think the author did too since there were a couple of point of view incosistencies throughout the book.

The other piece was just how annoying Shadow is. I get it, she is not used to taking orders but if you are teaming up with someone going 'I'm your apprentice' and then you go and well, are trying to take the lead it comes off as annoying. On top of it, the 'will they won't they' takes WAY too fucking long and is dragged on for what feels like a hundred pages. It just seems like the author was trying or was told to drag everything out for as long as humanly possible for goddamn it took TOO LONG.

However, teens might find it more interesting than I did. More melodrama over nothing might be something easier for teens to realte to than me.
