I was VERY excited for this book. I love current YA Fantasy, so when I received this, I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, I ended up very disappointed. The first part of the book moves far too slowly, then you get to where it moves far too fast with little character development. You are supposed to just fill that in yourself, I guess.

Anyway, Cal is a hardened assassin. He shows little in the way of emotions. He seems to not care about anyone or anything outside of his orders from the queen. That is until he meets Shadow. Now I don't mean they meet and have a love story, no. Within the first day they meet, he is literally falling all over himself and almost in tears when she gets hurt because... Well, we're never really filled in on why this hardened boy cares so much. Their chemistry is atrocious and their dialogue is even worse. I have never shipped two main characters less.

Not even the plot could hold this book together. None of it made any sense. I honestly wish I just DNF'd this book towards the middle but because it was an ARC, I really wanted to give an accurate review.
